I have to say the award for the "Best Swag" would have to go to Steve Ferguson from Hornguys. Steve was in the Kanstul booth. He was giving out a bottle opener key chain inscribed "Beer! It's your friend!" Ferguson Music 818.248.7550 www.hornguys.com. Now there's a useful free gift! Bill Watrous, Jiggs Whigham and John Marcellus played and signed autographs at the Conn Selmer booth. All sounded great but the way. Tried some really interesting horns. Williams was there with the model 6 in regular and light weight bells and .500 and a new dual bore .500/.508 slides Also a model 8 with 9" bell and . 522 slide. I really liked the Model 6 with light bell and .500 light slide. Steve Ferguson had a cool new Kanstul no model number yet. Kind of a Jiggs Whigam 2B style horn, really light and responsive. All those other great Kansul horns were there as well including a silver contra which I had no hope of getting a sound out out. The "tank" trombone case, light, compact and solid, looks like a winner, too. A surprise at the Courtois booth. The "Jazz Extreme" AC430TR. .500 bore lightweight slide, 7 1/2 bell very zippy, like a french sports car. Okay, I've never driven a french sports car but this was a very bright horn with a quick response. We have worked up Kid Ory's Creole Trombone and Turk Murphy's Trombone Rag. Now we want to work up Lassus Trombone. Can anyone out there recommend an arrangement that is true to the Filmore original that is purchasable? There seem to be a lot of deviant arrangements out there (for example, the Firehouse Five Plus Two arrangement). I suppose I could just get the original Filmore arrangement for band and adopt it, but I thought someone might know an accurate arrangement for a small dixieland group that already exists. Thanks for your help and Happy New Year to you all. Many years ago, back in the late 1950's I actually became interested in jazz by way of several Dixieland bands, among them, Turk Murphy, Bobby Hackett, Pete Fountain, Bob Crosby, Pete Daily, and of course the Firehouse Five + 2. I was a tuba player, back then, and I always dug those two-beat Dixie groups like FHF+2. I really enjoyed the tuba work by guys like Phil Stephens and George Bruns (wrote that famous Disney-classic-Davey Crockett), who did one or two FHF+2 recordings. In high school, I was greatly interested in knowing if the Ward Kimball and the FHF used "charts" and it he had some to sell to a very interested high school musician. I found Ward's address in a current Encyclopedia of Jazz (L. Feather) of that day (1960) and Leonard had actual postal addresses of many of those listed in his EoJ. No being too bashful, then, I wrote Ward Kimball (leader & trombonist of the FHF+2) a letter asking about his arrangements for the group. I expected to it to be a waste of $.05 (a 1st class stamp of that day!) and sent it and thinking he would never bother with some high-school kid in NW Ohio! Well, a few weeks later, I received a nice letter back from Ward (probably on a Disney letter-head) and he explained how the group worked-up new tunes. They would go to sales and purchase old sheet music from the 20's and 30's and let their piano player play the tune for them, if they were not real familiar with it and learn the "head" from him. No written charts were ever used, and they just started "jamming" on the tune and went from there. Any ideas? --Chuck we are looking for a bass trombone solo feature in a jazz band setting. our jazz band is probably not at the level or north texas state, but we have good players. i will play the first two movements of the brubeck concerto in my senior recital. i can play comfortably up to an a. i love pedal tones down to a pedal f. all styles are welcome. I'm not sure if this information helps but i am trying to give you as much information so that you can guide me appropriatly. i also need a recording of anything you would reccomend as my band director would have to approve my suggestion. i am willing to buy any cd if it is a jazz album. ------------------------------ _______________________________________________ Trombone-l mailing list Trombone-l@samford.edu http://maillists.samford.edu/mailman/listinfo/trombone-l End of Trombone-l Digest, Vol 36, Issue 21 ******************************************
