The audience does support the orchestra in their classical concerts as well - I mean after all, we did do FOUR performances of the Rite of Spring! And all well-attended if I remember correctly. It's just a bit disconcerting to hear tepid applause. They keep coming though... I've always thought that having a viable double is a real good idea...especially for 'bone players. Eventually the excitement goes away on both sides. I once told a radio interviewer that I didn't mind if people hated my music. He looked at me like I was nuts. I told him, and I still believe, that a strong emotional reaction to music is the sign of real success. If it is strong enough to get positive reactions, it will get negative reactions too. That's ok with me, people have varied tastes. It's when I can't get them to wake up or pay attention that I feel like I'm wasting my time. Of course that is all about art. There is commerce music too, and in that scene, what ever the buyer wants is fine with me. It seems like the Mexican orchestra has entered the commerce music realm, but luckily for them the buyer's need is to feel culturally superior, so the orchestra still gets to play good music. I have been a Knepper and Mingus fan ever since. Haitian Fight Song is one of my all time favorites.
