Jay Evans, trombone instructor in Samford's School of Performing Arts, became the principal trombone with the Alabama Symphony during the 2000-01 season. In June 2002, he appeared as soloist with the orchestra on the Sounds for Summer series. Evans has performed with the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, American Symphony, New York City Opera National Company and Miss Saigon on Broadway. He worked with notable conductors Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa and Jeffrey Tate while a fellow in trombone at the Tanglewood Music Center. He was also a participant at the Spoleto Festival Due Dei Monde and had a five year tenure with the internationally acclaimed Dallas Brass. If anyone is in the area come check this out. Not only is Jay a superb player, but the new recital hall has state of the art acoustic design. I had the good fortune to play in it with the Samford University Orchestra this fall. It is a wonderful venue. He is the bass-baritone for the male vocal ensemble Chanticleer. Aside from the raging I can do about their recordings (buy them all folks!!!) I strive to have the clarity, especially in the low register, that he does singing. All I can say is "Wow!" Also, although he is a low brass brethren, I consider Gene Pokorny an ARTIST that inspires me, not only in music, but in thought as well. Very intelligent, very musical. If you forget specifically what instrument they play while listening, and you are so taken by what you hear, there is no greater compliment. Not a tubist, not a musician, but an artist! Just two out of many... Jay On 2/2/07 5:50 PM, "thetubameister@adelphia.net" wrote: > My teacher, Ray Premru, continues to be my main inspiration. Boy, am I ever flattered to be included in THAT company. How much do I owe you, Jason? Seriously.... My mentors have been many, too. Some kind of order, until I *really* became aware and started listening for real (in college): MY TROMBONE HERO'S: ============================================ Jack Teagarden (my first real trombone LP, circa 8th grade) Trummy Young (whose name I didn't know for a very long time) Glenn Miller (because his recordings were available, even in the small towns of Texas) Tommy Dorsey (ibid, and I bought a method book with his name on it) Jack Jenny Urbie Green J. J. Johnson Carl Fontana Frank Rosolino Frank Rehak Bill Watrous Albert Manglesdorff Slide Hampton Dave "Stumpy" Steinmeyer Arthur Pryor Keith Brown The Chicago Symphony Brass Section of the mid-60s! I probably got much of my trombone sound, however, from Dr. Neil Humfeld at what was then called East Texas State University. Recordings don't do justice, though they give a great impression. Hearing a great player in person... well, there is simply no substitute. I am fortunate to have had two dedicated band directors, both of whom drove me and others in our band to Commerce for twice-a- year lessons. They would also take us to college band and jazz concerts as well as to hear Dr. Humfeld and that wonderful ETSU Trombone Choir. Recordings are great, but go hear live professional musicians whenever you get the opportunity. Motivation is the key to success. There are MANY trombone hero's out there waiting to be discovered. They deserve your ears! I'd like to add emphasis on George Roberts -- not only does he play well, but his advice when my oldest son asked for advice wasn't this exercise, or a certain horn, or even a playing technique. It was "keep a lot of love in your heart". Sounds good for anything, not just trombone.
