When I first heard him, years ago, his playing was a bit gawky. Now, Iâm inspired by how he took those meager beginnings and developed them into such powerful communication. His music was both personal and, at the same time, rhythmic enough to dance to. And whereas many an artist outlives his/her creativity and chops, Michael died in the middle of a growth spurt. I, for one, will certainly miss him. DanP _________________________________________________________________ Find sales, coupons, and free shipping, all in one place! He played with such intensity that it is hard to understand how he could have played a whole CD in what must have been a very weakened condition. Well, he was 100% music, and maybe that helped him through. I too, will miss him very much. Well, he was 100% music, and maybe that > helped him through. I had the honor of being present at Mel Lewis' last performance with his orchestra. It was at the IAJE in New Orleans in 1990. I was a student worker, checking credentials at the backstage door. Mel's band was on the program that night, and I saw some of the guys walking up (Mosca, Lovano, etc) and I was wondering who the skinny cat in the wheelchair was. As they neared, I realized it was Mel. He only played a few tunes with the band, Dennis Mackrel played the rest. They had to pretty much pick him up and put him behind the drums, but once he picked up the sticks, he was like a different guy. Strong and confident looking and sounding. As soon as the tune was over, he looked sick and weak again. The music was like magic. He died a couple of weeks later. Even the early stuff. My best friend in high school was a bass player. His younger brother played trumpet. Their dad owned the music store in town. We'd hang out in the store after closing and read through the sheet music collections for sh@#$ & giggles--not realizing it was actually good for us. And they whipped out the Steps Ahead book with "Safari" & "Oops." We ended up putting together a septet and playing them along with "Birdland" on a school talent show and won it. It's not that we were stellar or anything. We just sounded more put-together than the 15 other "Freebird" & KISS knock-offs that were on the bill. From those times I was introduced to those cats (Brecker, Stern, Gadd, Grolnick. Erskine, etc.) & have followed most of them closely ever since.
