All this talk of Polka Dots and Moonbeams reminds me that about a month ago I posted the audition material for our Vancouver Opera audition. You may recall that the list was pretty standard except we asked for a one-quarter-note-a-bar one octave scale and Polka Dots and Moonbeams. Well, the audition is tomorrow; I think there are about twelve candidates. I'm sure they're all very qualified for the job, and I'm sure we're going to enjoy playing with the successful applicant. But it's going to be fascinating hearing the "non-standard" repertoire - I can't wait! ...and isn't it thrilling about that Philly tuba audition? I posted the article from the Philadelphia Enquirer at work last night; the ladies (and most of the men!) were thrilled at the result. Maybe we'll get some "gender-balancing" in our section after tomorrow! Alain had major sirgery last week for stage 4 cancer. The surgery lasted 10/12 hours and Alain is expected to be hospitalized for 3 weeks during which time, future treatment will be determined. In addition to being an amazing trombone player, Alain has in recent years had an increasing number of conducting gigs, both in Canada and internationally. From my vantage point as a listener, it would appear that he has the potential to be a conducting superstar. Let us hope and pray that his recovery will be swift and seamless and he will soon be providing musical inspiration to us all. One recording from July 2-8 0f 51 at the Casino Ballrom, Avalon, Catalina Island, CA lists the 'bones as: Milt Bernhart, Harry Betts, Bob Fitzpatrick, Dick Kenny, and George Roberts on bass tb. One track, recorded March 25, 1951 at the Palladium indicates that Bart Varsalona replaced George Roberts for the date. Tracks recorded during the Bob Snyder Radio Show July 13, 1952 in Conn. list the section as: Bob Burgess, Frank Rosolino, Keith Moon, Bill Russo, and George Roberts on bass tb. Bill Russo, Bill Holman, Shory Rogers, & Gerry Mulligan were doing a lot of the arranging then, and they also did a lot of Pete Rugulo's charts from '47/'48. Hope this helps. I know of at least one other list member in addition to myself that is receiving these spams. The intriguing thing is that if you look at the website listed under his signature there are actually some quite interesting pictures of old instruments. Unfortunately there is no contact details on the site and it's of a shambolic design. Does anyone know how you could contact someone knowing the URL? Why he/she thinks someone's going to shell out 2500 euros ($2,987.75 or ?1,714.70 at today's rate) on pieces of old piping, which is what most of the pictures are. He's wasting his time spamming this list I would've thought. Mearl, it's relatively easy to access archives using Google. I've found I've never had to use any passwords that way. If the spammer knows some keywords he can soon build up a list of trombonists. The question is why he/she thinks we might be interested in this junk. Cheers! For those curious, I posted it on the Finale showcase for free download- http://www.finalemusic.com/showcase/ It is filed under Jazz/blues. (Note: The written slurs don't sound in the playback) This was written as a teaching piece for my third year students- it's based on the blues scale, though not a blues in form, and has a solo section where each player can improv in multiples of 8 bars. Range is to f above the staff to f below the staff in 2 of the three trombones; the other is lower; and the tuba (bass trombone is fine) part is low f to middle f. I found it a useful piece to teach, and seemed to go down with my late jr. high/ early highschoolers quite well, due to it's high energy. Enjoy, and feedback welcomed! One of my students (around 13 yrs old) came down with Bell's Palsy recently. His doctor said he would recover in 2-8 wks. Is it better to wait until everything thing feels completely normal before trying to play? He's a very promising student so I don't want him to get overly frustrated with this. First, of course you have to become a member, but that is a free download. Next select the single song "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans?", by "Take 6, Featuring Aaron Neville". It's a great rendition, and they do the old Mills Brothers routine of imitating trombones with just their voices. If you are not aware of the Take 6 group, please do yourself a favor and buy one of their CDs. This is the greatest vocal group since the Hi-Los. Gorgeous charts, impeccable pitch and phrasing and incredible singing. Aaron Neville, who I like too, sounds very good singing the melody (though I could do with slightly less vibrato), with Take 6 doing the backup with their usual superior musicality. And the whole song just costs $.99. A bargain!! Less than a cup of coffee. A LOT less than a cup of Starbucks. Have fun, Bill Dinwiddie billdin@comcast.net By the way...you don't have to have an I-Pod to download the I-Tunes program to your computer, and then just play the songs from your computer's sound card. ------------------------------ Message: 13 Date: Thu, 9 Mar 2006 11:54:29 -0600 From: "Bill Dinwiddie" Subject: Re: [Trombone-l] Do You Know What It Means To: "List Trombone" Message-ID: <000501c643a2$83867d70$0a00a8c0@av> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Sorry, I forgot to include a link to the I-Tunes download.
