My horn was tuned at the factory! Mine was too, but they put too much tubing on my Gb valve and didn't even supply a hacksaw. What great fortune! The first was "The Day the Earth Stood Still", directed by Robert Wise with music by Bernard Hermann. The second was "2001: A Space Odyssey", directed by Stanley Kubrick, music by various geniuses. These movies, while both great examples of the science fiction genre, are very different, especially musically. Bernard Hermann's wonderful minimalistic score for two Theremins, 4 pianos, electric violin, and various other instruments, is what most people have now accepted as the quintessential style for SF, horror or otherwise weird movies. Kubrick's selection of music from composers the Strausses, Ligeti, et al, was as inspired as the movie itself. The music fit the visual part like a glove, despite the fact than none of it was written for the movie. I understand that Alex North was commissioned to write an actual score, but after Kubrick got used to listening to Zarathustra, Atmospheres, etc, during the editing process, he eventually rejected the score by North in favor of the music which he had only been using as a substitute until the real score was finished. I never heard the Alex North score. Does any one know if it has been released? It must have been recorded by MGM, or Kubrick would not have had anything to compare to the final music. For the last few times I have seen these movies, I have tried to shut myself off from the drama, and just listen to the music, as I would on a CD. But I just can't do it. I keep finding myself swept up by the great craftsmanship of these great movies and the music recedes to its intended place. Of course that is what movie music is supposed to do, and in these efforts, it does so brilliantly.
