I am currently about two thirds of the way through the book and must say that it is an enjoyable read. Any time I read of the big band era, it never ceases to amaze me of the vast number of musicians and the unbelievable amount of work. Levinson has done his homework for the 100th anniversary of TD's birth last year. Interviews, travels and lots of other resources lead to another book describing the era and focusing on a superstar. Before reading this book, I would suggest George Simon's "The Big Bands" to get a focus on the time period, especially if you are under 40. What a great time to be a musician! This book shows that Dorsey was a taskmaster. Like all conductors who became superstars in any genre, it was "my way or the highway". Nothing wrong with that, they all got the results they wanted. Buddy Rich and Frank Sinatra both pale in comparison to the often time ruthless Tommy Dorsey. On the other side though he is shown as a caring supportive leader offering help to struggling musicians and being supremely hospitable. Should you buy this book? If you have any interest in the history of popular music in America, this is one of several you should add to your collection. Build yourself a library of resource material. The book is worth the price alone just as a description of some of the great arrangements that came through the Dorsey band. While ordering this, order the companion 3 disc CD set that celebrates the centennial of Dorsey's birth. Hear him playing trumpet, his own composition, "Trombonology" and even Elvis singing with the band. Aside from these all of the great arrangements are there. Ah, but sadly, I'm not aware of any recordings of Dorsey browbeating his employees, like the infamous Buddy Rich "bus tape" where he fired the Australian trombone player. --Bill ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Thu, 12 Jan 2006 21:49:21 +0100 From: Patrik Arvhult Subject: Re: [Trombone-l] Stupid human tricks: Ants - too funny To: trombone-l@server5.samford.edu Message-ID: <200601122149.34118.arvhult@musiker.nu> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Ants! I haven't got an official copy of the job description, but I believe they're looking for a candidate who can teach both classical and jazz. You can find out a bit more about the jazz program at www.ucojazzlab.com . If you have any questions about the program...or about the area....I'd be happy to field them. My Bordogni books with CD of synthesized accompaniments give a harmonic context that any Rochut lover will enjoy. The accompaniments also cajole you into playing everything, everything, in tune and on time. My own intonation book-with-CD, "Breakfast," is mostly scales, arpeggios, and material from Arban's Method. The drones tracks alone are worth the $14. One reviewer calls it a self-help book; another reviewer thinks it's more about technique than intonation. Either way, it's material that you can use every day; it's nourishment, not medicine like many of the intonation trainers. http://mysite.verizon.net/~dschwar/ David David A. Schwartz 70 Douglas Rd.
