Half of the [water key] spring was broken, making the key move about 1 or 2 mm off center. It wasn't actually leaking (y'all know that big time fuzzy sound when that happens), just not quite sealing, especially when I played loud and high. I got it fixed and today was so much better. Anybody else have that happen? Jim Prindle " Yes, leaks in different volumes and locations all can have variable acoustic effects. I had a bass trombone from the late 1920s that sounded fine all over but on pedal Bb, there was a strange spread to the sound. Since it only happened on that pitch in that octave I checked out the slide and one of the ferules (connecting the bow to the outside slide tube) was not completely soldered! By re-soldering the joint (thus stopping the leak) the acoustical anomaly went away. I know of a trumpet player who had pin hole sized leak on the bell where they held it and only discovered that when they moved their hand off the hole, the tone changed noticeably. As a sometime repair tech I've seen dozens of brass instruments with all kinds of puzzled owners complaining about how their instrument "sounds funny" on certain notes/paritals, when many times it's just leakage of the water key. Just periodically inspect this often overlooked area of your instrument and take care of weak, old springs before they break. I also am a proponent of Neoprene versus cork for water keys. If you like trombones and you like jazz, you should buy this album. In my opinion, it is as good or better than anything else out there you will come across. I was in the exact same class as Jim at Eastman, 1968-72. We didn't really know each other. He always had great chops from the day he arrived and Remington made him and the rest of us very well schooled trombonists. When I read what's said on the list and what people like to argue about, I find it funny at times. People seem to think they have to advertise their qualifications in order to have an opinion. There are people who don't like Heifitz's violin playing. I prefer Gil Shaham to Maxim Vengerov. So what. In trombonists I love Abbie Conant based on hearing her one record. Now if I were to say that I think Abby plays more musically than Joe Alessi who is much more famous, I would probably have a fight on my hands. It's a big, big world out there world and there is room for every creative soul and idea. As a classical player I have a huge respect for what jazz players can do in both a technical and musical/harmonic sense. If I could develop into even a passable jazz player it would undoubtedly make me a much better player overall.--Mark -----Original Message----- From: Bonemaster [mailto:bonemstr@america.net] Sent: Saturday, January 29, 2005 6:01 PM To: narins@pacbell.net; 'Multiple recipients of list' Subject: RE: [TROMBONE-L:3773] Jim Pugh CD Thanks for the link, Mark.
