Wonderful voice although his manner of singing is not for everyone. He had a big hit on his own with a tune called "Unchained Melody". He was also blind. I've always liked his singing. You are right. I've been playing trombone off and on since about 1965, and I didn't know you could play Gb in first, but you can. As you bend the pitch down from Bb, you can feel it stabilize slightly right about Gb. Amazing the things you don't know you can do unless you try. -----Original Message----- From: Raymond Horton [mailto:rayhorton@insightbb.com] Sent: Saturday, January 22, 2005 01:06 To: rayhorton@insightbb.com Cc: needhame1@plateautel.net; TROMBONE-L@server5.samford.edu; timothy.a.richardson@us.army.mil Subject: Re: [TROMBONE-L:3642] Re: Valve alignment (was: Non-responding Baritone low register) - maybe you could help with a test? Correction! My earlier message should have read down a MAJOR third for trumpets and trombones. On Bb trombones the falset note is generally Gb in first position. Other notes can be bent into place (as thetubameister's post demonstrates) but this series will usually be most successful. A brass quartet (two trumpets, horn, and T-bone) I play in has been asked to play pre-program music entertainment for a community-wide speaking engagement with Gracia Burnham as the featured speaker. We would be playing a variety of music for a 45-minute period while people are being seated before the program starts. We plan on alternating with a pianist, who would be playing a style of music most likely different from what we plan to play. The people finalizing the program asked me what the program should show as pre-program entertainment. I didn't think "prelude music" was really appropriate since there isn't really a concert or "service" of any kind to follow. So,...I'd like to hear your suggestions for what you think would be appropriate to list in the program. Thank you, in advance, for your thoughtful and expert advice. If you haven't already, be sure to check out his fantastic first book, "Duke's Bones" which is a very thorough history/discography of the Duke Ellington trombone section [complete with several transcribed solos]. I had a very nice visit with Kurt at IAJE conference earlier this month and he said the new book is at the publisher's [ "Advanced"...a wonderful jazz education publisher!] and it should be in print by next year. Kurt interviewed tons of players and dedicated himself to this topic for MANY years. Should be cool!! I only wish something like that had been written when I was in school!! The author is Steven Loewy. The publisher is listed as Berkeley Hills Books. 350 pages. paperback. Amazon gives a price of $15.95. From Amazon, the following blurb... Trombone Masters is divided into two parts. The first traces the development and evolution of the trombone in jazz, from early styles and players, to the swing era and artists like Jack Teagarden, to bebop and such exemplars as J. J. Johnson, and on to postbop, jazz-funk, avant-garde, free jazz, and beyond. The second part contains reviews of the major jazz albums with prominent trombonists working either as leaders or sidemen. Along with dozens of photographs, a discography for major artists is included. Amazon says it was published November 30, 2004, but they have no stock. Also the publisher, Berkeley Hills Books, has yet to add this book to its web site. I originally heard about this book indirectly from Eugene Grissom of Florida. I think Mr. Loewy regularly reviews new music ( new CDs ) for the All Music Guide site, but I am not positive its the same person. Regards, Jeff Thompson
