He said the Maynard design was flawed and was difficult to hold. Ashley had a brace moved to make it ergonomic. But he could do impressive things with it - fast valve riffs with slide bends interspersed, etc. The next day I told a prominent University trombone prof I was blown away by the demo - the prof (who hadn't heard Ashley's demo) scoffed, said, "I'm not impressed" as he held his trombone out. "I tell my students this is the most perfect wind instrument, just the way it is." or something like that. What the prof said is true, but still is close-minded. (And if his trombone was so perfect, why did it have an F-attachment?) Ray H. ----- Original Message ----- From: K.D. While the possibility is there, the Superbone suffers from an incredibly small bore size, rendering the sound of a valve trombone. Yuck! A former owner of one, Earl Earl Needham, KD5XB, Clovis, New Mexico DM84jk SETI@Home: 11643WU/7.56yrs I'd just add that a combination of very small bore and too large a bell tended to produce an excessively blatty sound, at least on the earlier superbones. I grew up with a King 2B slide/valve combo, and my little brother had a Conn 5G, so I once knew what I was talking about WRT valve trombones and their sounds. Another tangent: I recently lent my King flugabone and nearly identical Kanstul flugabone around the bone and trumpet sections in one of the bands I play in, and they were compared to Reynolds marching trombones and Getzen bass trumpets. One guy liked the Reynolds best (because the flugabones sounded too much like trombones -- go figure); everybody else liked the Kanstul best, King second-best; one trumpet player thought they all were too heavy. -- Gary Sloane sloane@batnet.com A gentleman knows how to play the slide-trombone but chooses not to. -- Mark Twain From: "William P. They don't get many chances to do that with their wall-to-wall schedule. This year I am planning on bringing in a cue we just recorded for a Pixar animated feature film. That should be something different and fun for them. We also have two days to hang out a little. They have had some incredible clinicians to work with this summer and since I am coming in fairly late, I try to pick up on any "loose ends" that their other clinicians might not have brought up. I kind of leave the direction of the clinic part up to them. Sometimes, we talk about life in the freelance world or maybe some specific musical things, auditioning, improvisation [I like to especially encourage the participation of the group's NON improvisors!], brass stuff and/or "goal setting" as it relates to music. We swap some stories. I try to be organized but loosely so. I was in the band way-back-when, but I still remember being in their shoes really clearly! It's usually a very enjoyable experience and I always enjoy performing with the band.
