We did four pieces with him, and he had all of the scores thoroughly memorized. He didn't need to use them AT ALL in rehearsals--in fact, he knew exactly which measures in which parts had wrong notes in them. He also knew exactly where the rehearsal markings were. Being just 16 years old at the time, I thought that was pretty incredible. > Frederick Fennell (renowned wind band conductor) will conduct the Denver > Concert Band at our next concert in February. I, also, heard the Army Blues at ITF and found many of these same problems with the sound, as reproduced by their sound support staff. I can't remember if the Army Blues was using Belmont College's board and related sound equipment, or if they were using GI sound equipment. Those of us at ITF heard many unamplified groups perform, and I never had a problem hearing any of the trombones. I, also, wonder why they must use all of the heavy miking? In a related story, many years ago, I had the opportunity to hear the Buddy Rich Band at a great, old, ballroom in central Ohio at Indian Lake, OH. At this time, Buddy used just a couple of mikes for his soloists; and, yes, the band sounded just wonderful, with such great woodwind sounds coming from his sax section. I always marveled at how many great charts he had that used flutes and clarinets in various combinations. His band could really blow; however, they could lay back and let the woodwind colors come through. Several years later, I heard Buddy's Band at Wittenberg University, and sadly, everyone was miked; and it was unbearable and had no tone color or warmth at all. Maynard's smaller bands have also gone this route, as I heard Maynard's band, when Adrian was in, and it was not over miked and had some great tone color and warmth. Of course, his playing in both settings was superb. Really a joy to hear. I left the concert after the Rouse piece. I didn't want to water down the moment by sitting through "The Planets" afterward. ;-) But the one thing that stood out for me in the masterclass was the *effectiveness* of his teaching. He worked with 7 college students (individually) in the masterclass. *EVERY* one of the 7 sounded noticeably better by the end of his/her "lesson". Seven came in and played their prepared pieces. And seven played their pre-prepared pieces significantly *better* after the lesson. (Even if it is correct, he may not check it often, and may use another one, more often.) Anyway, my Extreme Thanks to all of you for your kindness! I gotta get back to work.
