It's week point is the flimsy bell. A colleague of mine put a bach 50B bell on it, and it made it it into a new horn, fabulous! I have a 612B which George Roberts played on along with the 322 when he was with Yamaha. The one I have is stock, but has a heavier bell on it, and independent linkages although the valve are dependent. The slide also has a removeable leadpipe. I use an Edwards #2 leadpipe with it, and it's fantastic! A great all around horn. This is the mouthpiece I used in College. After a 14 year hiatus from the horn I just picked up where I left off, using the same mouthpiece that I used that long ago. The silver plate is wearing off the rim of the mouthpiece and I think it is time to replace it. Naturally, the question in my mind is: "Should I just buy the same mouthpiece, or do a search for a new one". I've tried to do some research on various mouthpieces and it seems that the basic premise is - "The mouthpiece should feel well and allow you to play well." The 12C definitely feels well, but what about playing well? I don't expect a mouthpiece to replace the directions to Carnegie Hall, but I'm wondering if I shouldn't be getting more out of that piece of equipment. The Online Trombone Journal has the following note about a mouthpiece: "It should be consistently playable. That is, it should allow the trombonist to play across his or her entire range with a relatively uniform effort (and not too much of one), without a tendencyÊto wander off the pitch at any portion of the player's range, during changes in dynamics, tone coloration, etc.." In my own playing, upper register notes (say E above the staff and up) lean to the sharp side. Well, lean might be an understatement based on comments from my playing buddies. I chalked that up to the stress of getting my embouchure to generate the 'squeeze' necessary to get the tone up higher. I adjust for it now with the slide. Could a mouthpiece change allow me to get a better handle on this? If so, where should I start to look? Deeper cup, wider rim, or what? I understand that this is probably a very broad subject, but I would appreciate the help. Thanks, Norm ----__ListProc__NextPart____TROMBONE-L__digest_1951 Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 14:01:23 -0500 From: Ted Keener To: trombone-l@lists.missouri.edu Subject: unsubscribe Message-ID: <200102121901.NAA22051@ultra1.pitnet.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="us-ascii" unsubscribe ----__ListProc__NextPart____TROMBONE-L__digest_1951 Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 15:26:49 -0500 From: "Nobuaki Seki" To: "Trombones and related issues forum." The silver plate is wearing off the rim of the mouthpiece and I think it is time to replace it. I?m going to give an old friend one of my trombones. He used to play with a 12C and I actually have one kicking around. So, I had a reason to give it a try (I generally play a significantly larger mouthpiece). I also did a bit of measuring and found that it was quite similar to a Yamaha 47, of which I have two. I?d say that the 47 is way better than the 12C. The rim is more comfortable. The tone is cleaner. It?s a heavier mouthpiece, so the attach is cleaner. I?ve drilled out the aperture of one of the 47s that I have, so that the tone doesn?t break up so quickly. It?s significantly more versatile, as a result. I?m going to suggest that my friend use one of my 47s, rather than a 12C and I suggest the same to you. I mean, for crying out loud, that horn is no more than 31 years old; and how does one know the typewritten affidavit is authentic?
