There is so much going on that if I don't do it then, I probably won't do it at all. Or if I do try to practice later, the chances are good that I will be distracted by thoughts of the other things that need to get done. Also, practicing first thing gets me ready for any playing that I have to do later in the day. (I admit, I am a morning person.) Check around the music school and see if there is a room or another prof's studio that you can get a key to and use regularly. Subject: Practice Time Here is a question aimed specifically towards listers with day jobs. When do you practice? In the fall, I started teaching at a local university. Part of my duties include a musicianship class that meets most mornings at either 9 or 10. This was the time of day that I like to practice. I would wake up, eat breakfast, watch a cycle of Sportscenter, then I would be good and awake, and ready to practice. Well, the teaching gig has completely screwed up that schedule, along with my golf game as well. I am part time at the University, so I don't have an office to practice in, and I live too far away to come home between classes. Those of you on the list that work 9 to 5's, when do you practice? We live across the street from a church where I am also one of the organists, so that's my early-morning practice location (one hour, 6:30-7:30). Most days I can fit in another hour at home in the middle of the day - we own a weekly newspaper in the town where we live. And if there's no gig in the evening it's easy to get in another hour then. Since I've adopted this schedule during the past few months I find that watching TV has pretty much gone by the wayside. Don't miss it at all... I find playing at night works better than early AM for me and my family (who are not the heavy sleepers like the rest of the list families). I play anywhere in the house that fits, the bathroom (great feedback), the bedroom, the garage. I prefer to not use a practice mute until the neighbors mute their dog. :-). I will start anywhere from 7 PM to 1030 PM and find the length of practice time is what matters more to my wife than the frequency of practices per week. I shoot for 1-1.5 hours, and will clip a 30 minute segment in when the timing is right. As far as Trombone Widows, my wife has recently started quilting as a full time hobby, so we compare the two often. She has never played an instrument and doesn't always understand the requirement of face time and fundamentals. But she can relate me trying to produce a pure constant quality tone to sewing a straight line (just try it on a free quilt sometime), or how certain skills deteriorate when you don't use them enough. Oddly enough, quilting has Conventions (meetings) too, so if I want to go to the TMEA, she can relate to how this impacts on my playing after she attended a few quilting shows. I am able to get 2-3 practice sessions a week (not enough, but will have to do) and a group rehearsal as well. I have found this makes progress slower but I have become efficient in my use of practice time and make the most of it. I take a lesson 1-2 times a month to broaden my expectations. Welcome to the real world. You have the time NOW, though you say you don't. If these hardworking people can squeeze in their practice time around raising a family and working a full time job, finding time to practice around school work is a luxury for you now. Do your learning now, later practice is for maintaining the skills you learn. Now you know where the term "Weekend Warriors" came from. I salute their dedication and perserverence. To my knowledge, only the Peabody ducks (who are housed on the roof) have heard me practicing looking out over the city of Memphis. Also, roadside parks and public parks are good places to practice. I notmally work through Remington studies and scales and etudes daily. It's ironic that, after 40 years of practicing the trombone, strangers still come up to me and ask, "So you're taking trombone lessons, huh?", not realizing that trombone calisthenics and exercises are not just the signs of a beginner. How do you use a Wallace mute with a bass trombone? I tried it & it was too small. Is there an extra ring of rubber that comes with it? I have also struggled to find adequate practice time. I work part-time, but it can still be difficult. Fortunately for me, I've been able to arrange my schedule to be home in the mornings most days, and it makes a huge difference to be able to play then, rather than touching the horn for the first time in the late afternoon. When I do have to work in the morning, I find it really helpful to play even for 2-3 minutes before I leave, or do some mouthpiece playing somewhere along the way. That contact helps the more serious playing later to feel less foreign & awful. Gabe __________________________________________________ Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! I've found that going somewhere else occasionally can be extremely helpful. Get away from the TV, the computer, etc. & you can get A LOT done in a fairly short period of time. I tend to go to Boston University, since they don't have a guard or monitor the practice rooms (you know what NEC is like, Jen!), but I also know people who work out situations with local churches, etc. Look around, you might be able to find a place to go every day, or a couple of days. Give your family a break, give yourself some focus... Gabe __________________________________________________ Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo!
