It is actually arranged for the whole trombone section as a 'bone feature, but it can be played as a 'bone solo if desired since the lead is all in the first 'bone. It is in the key of D (highest note C#, unless you want to go higher on the cadenza at the end), and the 'bone solo is AAB, followed by tutti band (including the rest of the bones if they want) for a while then back to the bridge with the 'bone solo and out. Needs a strong Sax section, but very playable at HS/College level with a strong 1st 'bone. John ----- Original Message ----- From: "Porter" To: "Trombones and related issues forum." If you want all the 'bones involved in a nice up-tempo arrangement, check out the Dave Wolpe arrangement for Jazz Ensemble. It is also grade 4 and starts in the Key of D with the melody lead switching between 1st and 2nd 'bone, then switches to Bb at the double-bar and tempo change. There is some nice ensemble section work required, with improv sections for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd bone. The lead 'bone ends on F (above high Bb). ----- Original Message ----- From: "John McVey" To: "Trombones and related issues forum." I've done this arrangement (augmented with strings and other incidental orchestra musicians), and several others by Bill Holcombe, with Bill playing lead alto and feeding tempos to our mostly-clueless-with-pops assistant conductor. Bill comes up to the Rhode Island Philharmonic once or twice a year. Very nice guy, and a great arranger. In both cases the improvements were immediate and dramatic. Both horns became more responsive, and played more evenly throughout all the registers. The low register opened up quite a bit. The notesÊbecame better centred. Articulation improved. The only change in the high register was that both horns became more predictable upstairs. I am playing this one now for grad school auditions too. I just got a MD recorder and was listening to myself play the second movement. For a moment I thought it was a funeral dirge! I checked the metronome and sure enough, I was way too slow. And I was breathing in too many places. With the faster tempo (that the composer indicates) I can sing my phrases out and not worry about getting in enough air. Good luck to you with your auditions! Maybe we'll end up at the same school? My first audition was this past weekend (20th) and I had to prepare three solos. I played the first movement of the Larsson and was stopped before starting the second movement and asked to go onto an excerpt. Wonder what that means?
