When I thought up the idea I was doubtful that I would receive any entries, how wrong I was! I received entries from 14 people, most offering more than one title. And excellent suggestions they were too, giving me much food for thought. Thank you for the kind words that many of you had for the piece itself. I can now get on with proof reading the parts, the music should be ready by the end of March. In the end I chose a title "Trombones on the Town". It is based on a suggestion made by Mike, Captainwelch@excite.com, who wins a complementary set. Well done all, and many thanks again for some interesting comments both on the title and the music itself. -- Nigel Horne. Arranger, Composer, Conductor, Typesetter. It was even on sale for $14.99 and was a featured CD at their listening/preview kiosks. Wonderful recording. I think this CD would fall into the category that I believe Hanspeter brought up awhile back. Clear mind of all thoughts and just listen. Or was it Howard? So far, it has performed admirably: my high range is suddenly in tune, clearer, and more focused in the altissimo register, and I have less trouble switching registers throughout the range in general. The sound is much easier to keep smooth in the bass notes and the pedals are easier to control. My basis for comparison, by the way, is a Schilke 60. So far, so good.... Incidentally, I'm more supportive than ever of the advent of the Replica mouthpiece; this I can afford, whereas the original was far too expensive for my emaciated checkbook. I'll keep anyone potentially interested in the Doug Yeo mouthpiece updated on my progress, if desired. Anyway, I come up with this in the shower, this morning. Iāve always contended that keeping a music group together was harder than keeping a marriage going. Everyoneās growing in different directions. Thereās always some other group that promises to make more money and wants your sax player. But, also, you wind up spending a lot of time together. You need to get along with each other in a world where ćgetting alongä is not simply sitting in front of the same TV program every night. To have relationships in the group work, you need to bring something to the table. You need a life to share with others in the group. If you donāt already have a life or yours needs an upgrade, college is a good place to find one. Now, Iām not convinced that you get the most life per hour in music classes, but you do get some. Hopefully, while youāre there, youāll take some liberal arts and science courses. Theyāre really aimed at giving you something to talk about. Yes I included science courses, not only because I think tat the sciences are basic but also because, like it or not, this world is being taken over by technology and the better you understand that stuff, the better you will fare in that world. So, if to go to school or not is the question, I give school a resounding yes. I also say yes to a few years of harmony and ear training. Whether you get a degree in music or particle physics doesnāt matter all that much, as far as whether you can play your horn. Iām afraid that only practice will help that. On the other hand, if you are looking to be able to network your way into a music job, you have a good chance of meeting that other person in music school.
