What are they like? < Jon. I think you probably mean a Rath trombone. Mick Rath to be precise. I have one of Mick's bass trombones which he made for me tuned to F/G/Eb as opposed to the now normal F/Gb/D tuning. I think a list member (Paul Kemp?) has played it on his visit to the UK when Mick had it in the shop. The instrument is lovely and responsive and what makes it really special are the Hagmann valves. I've also got one of his slides, the tubes of which he draws himself, to fit the bell section of my Roth Reynolds valve trombone. So now I have a Rath Roth Reynolds - how's that for a load of r's? No comments Adrian please! Mick makes a full range of, as yet, Bb instruments but may be embarking on an extension of the range in the near future. These instruments are gaining a reputation in the UK in all fields, classical, brass and wind band and jazz. Mark Nightingale, for example, has been a help on the development of the 1R straight tenor. I suggest you visit the Rath web site - www.rathtrombones.com where you'll find more info. Not only does Mick make superb trombones but he is a thoroughly nice guy, along with the rest of his small team. Regards Derrick Parker From ???@??? Being a former H.S. band director, because of this Marching is king attitude, I took a different approach to marching season. It occurred only during football season. We did a different show at every football game. The visual stuff was the least important thing. We would cadence into a different formation for each song but stand there while playing. My focus was on the music and the push to learn it new each week. During the season the band worked up between 16 adn 24 new songs. We were done in November and could then focus on Concert Band literature. This was totally opposite and contrary to the typical mentality encountered in So. CA. I am a clarinetist and also play somewhere between a trombone and a trumpet, but it's really more like a soprano tuba, or a french horn tuba (I hear) a flugel horn, and I'm not very good with my brasswind embouchure, so I am no great influence. I phrase it this way so I don't cloud the issue; this represents my thinking on tone unrelated to certain other value judgments like "dull" and "edgy." I separate these concepts from dark and bright because that are not synonymous. It is possible to play with a "dark" sound and yet project and have a lively, non "dull" quality. And "edge" is strictly defined as harmonic distortion. A bright sound on a brass instrument does not necessarily have to have "edge" or harmonic distortion in order to be termed "bright." Easiest way is to switch to a bigger mouthpiece. You can go to a mouthpiece with a bigger throat and keep the same cup size and make quite a difference. -Steve From ???@??? What he did was to have a straight trombone slide slightly angled to the right. The reasoning being - there is somewhat better virtuosity or technique (or something) with the arm extending that direction. I don't know about anatomy, but it does seem the arm goes out farther to the side than it does out front. It sounds awkward to me! His mouthpiece was straight and the angle started at the shank. I don't know if anyone else had one or if these were ever marketed. My only knowledge of the horn is from a picture I once saw of it on a old LP cover featuring Mr. Schuman. It was hard to tell how the thing worked. Personally, I play straight ahead and set my music stand to the right. What do YOU think about your tone? If you ARE playing with a brighter tone than you REALLY want, try a deeper cup, a heavier mouthpiece, or a bit larger backbore. Otherwise, if you are happy with your tone, tell whoever told you the above that he or she MIGHT consider giving you advice after they learn to accurately read your mind ;-) Best I can do under the influence of massive doses of cold medication. Give them a call if you are in the area and you could probably arrange to stop by and play the horns. BTW, I had the chance to play for a few minutes on a Boosey with Hagmann valves a few weeks ago. I was pleasantly impressed. The horn is very easy to play, nice response, very focused, valves work fine. Sound is not quite as thick or as large as a Bach, in my opinion, but it was a very playable horn. I expected something of a lighter weight horn, but it's not (my comments above notwithstanding); the bell seems to be a little heavier than a Bach 50, overall the horn was nice and solid, the slide worked just fine. These horns are priced affordably, I think they are in the range of just over $2,000. I would recommend them to a high school player without hesitation, and would not gripe if a student came into a lesson with one. The Rath trombones, from pictures I have seen on the website, have a more open wrap than the Boosey version. The Hagmann valves are quite exellent. However, I would not say that they surpass the Thayers in terms of openness and smooth changes from open to engaged. They have (at least the Boosey wrapped version) still a small bit of the pop as the valve is engaged, but they are nice and focused with a good deal of openness. A set of two Hagmanns with all tubing is about $500-600 less than a set of Thayers, so that's a plus. -Randy Campora ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Randy Campora, Bass Trombonist Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Peabody Conservatory of Music campora@peabody.jhu.edu 410-461-1984 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From ???@??? It is an interesting beast and I most recently "played" it with the Nashville Symphony when we "lip-synced" our on field performance of the national anthem for the Tennessee Titan's first game in the new stadium. It is quite a piece of trombone history and represents a fine understanding of physiology, but the advent of the F-attachment made it unnecessary. I will say that the mechanical advantage of the angled slide is amazing. Sixth position is an easy shift and seventh is not a stretch. No wonder it was seen as an advantage for a straight horn. If you think a dark sound (and practice!), you will eventually get it, or at least be a lot closer than you were. When I was playing a King 4B (usually dubbed "bright") I was told that I sounded like I was playing a Bach, which I assume was because everyone I played with and listened to (even my teacher) played Bachs or similar instruments. Of course, trying to make a peashooter sound teutonic at FF would be a bit of stretch, but within slightly more reasonable parameters we have a lot of leeway.
