The comments offered by the authors represent only one way to approach the study of orchestral excerpts. The serious student of this genre will use the information contained here in conjunction with thoughtful listening, dedicated practice, and diligent study to form an educated approach to orchestral trombone playing.
Bass trombonists are encouraged to visit Douglas Yeo's Bass Trombonists' Orchestral Handbook for a list of appropriate bass trombone audition repertoire.
The following, originally web-published by Douglas Yeo, is based on one put together by the American Symphony Orchestra League in their publication, "Facing The Maestro: A Musician's Guide to Orchestral Audition Repertoire." It was compiled and edited by Katherine Akos, Marshall Burlingame and Jack Wellbaum. In addition to lists of audition repertoire for each instrument culled from audition lists for vacancies in over 20 orchestras, it includes a list of publishers for each work and their addresses. To obtain the complete book, write: The American Symphony Orchestra League, 633 East Street NW, Washington, DC 20004 (phone 202.628.0099).
